Peace Begins with Youth

FAMUN 2026 brings the theme “Peace Begins with Youth”, inspired by the United Nations (UN) campaign “Peace Begins with Me”, which emphasizes the role of individuals in building peace through UN missions. At a time when the world faces rising hate speech, violent conflicts, and a crisis of multilateralism, FAMUN recognizes that peace cannot be left solely to governments and institutions. It must be nurtured by people, especially the younger generations who are already shaping the future. This theme challenges students to see peace not as an abstract diplomatic goal, but as a daily practice rooted in empathy, respect, and dialogue. Just as the UN campaign highlights the responsibility of each person to contribute to peace, FAMUN 2026 calls on youth to take ownership of this mission by transforming their words and actions into tools for reconciliation and understanding, especially in the fields of human rights and disarmament and non-proliferation. Ultimately, “Peace Begins with Youth” is more than a theme: It is a movement. It affirms that the voices of young people are indispensable in the struggle against division and violence, and that their commitment to justice and solidarity can lay the foundation for a more peaceful and cooperative world.

SIMULATIONS

United Nations General Assembly – First Committee

Youth, disarmament and non-proliferation
Language: English

Do states truly have what it takes to empower youth to lead disarmament and non‑proliferation processes? By bringing this topic to the simulation, FAMUN underscores and supports the growing recognition within the United Nations that young people must be active partners in advancing global peace and security. The discussions emphasize the meaningful participation of youth in disarmament education, awareness‑raising, and policymaking, affirming that their voices are essential to building a safer future. In this simulation, as representatives of UN Member States, delegates are invited to explore how empowering youth can strengthen multilateral efforts to reduce arms, prevent proliferation, and foster a culture of dialogue and responsibility. By connecting advocacy with diplomacy, the debate highlights that lasting disarmament is not only a matter of treaties and negotiations, but also of engaging the next generation to lead with creativity, courage, and commitment to peace.

Conselho da Juventude da ONU

Juventude e direitos humanos

United Nations Youth Council

Youth and human rights
Language: English

What if young people were not just consulted, but truly empowered to shape global responses to human rights violations and the climate crisis? The simulation of the UN Youth Council, a futuristic body, places youth voices at the heart of global governance. Drawing inspiration from reports of the United Nations Human Rights Council on youth participation in climate change and global environmental decision-making, the debate recognizes that young people are both disproportionately affected by human rights violations in the context of the ecological crisis and uniquely positioned to drive transformative change. FAMUN participants are invited to reflect on how youth movements can have greater influence in climate and environmental forums by overcoming barriers to participation and advancing climate justice through a human-rights-based approach. In a world marked by overlapping crises and growing distrust, the debate underscores that strengthening youth leadership is essential to protecting human rights and building a more just and environmentally healthy future.

United Nations General Assembly – First Committee

Youth, disarmament and non-proliferation
Language: English

Can institutions traditionally built on militarization and State control genuinely empower youth to dismantle the very systems that sustain them? Representing Member States in the UN General Assembly, delegates must grapple with this paradox. The debate must push beyond tokenistic “awareness‑raising” into the radical question of agency: Whether youth can seize leadership in disarmament and non‑proliferation, not as passive partners but as architects of a new security paradigm. By confronting the limits of diplomacy and exposing the contradictions of State‑driven processes, this simulation challenges participants to envision disarmament and non-proliferation as a generational struggle, one where creativity, defiance, and collective courage may matter more than treaties signed in guarded rooms.
