Flip the Script: A World of Infinite Possibilities

In November 2022, the world reached 8 billion people. After facing a global pandemic and a climate crisis, this is not only a numerical milestone but also a call to humanity to transform the way we think and act to make a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable world for all. For that, FAMUN 2023 invites all participants to join the UN campaign “Flip the Script”, which aims to recalibrate the way we talk to each other, reimagine our purpose for the future and reinvent solutions to speed up the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. FAMUN 2023 is also inspired by the United Nations Population Fund campaign “8 billion: A World of Infinite Possibilities”, since flipping the script will require creativity and imagination to find solutions for global challenges that take into account both people and the planet.

UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Fourth Committee

International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space
Portuguese | High School

The 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) discusses the peaceful use of outer space since 1958 when there was a concern that an arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union would extend beyond the Earth. The UNGA included this agenda item to promote cooperation among states, preventing the use of outer space for non-peaceful purposes. Outer space is a global common, as it is beyond the national jurisdiction of states. Therefore, the management of activities carried out in this area and their results should be directed toward the benefit and interest of all humanity. Since the end of the Cold War, the challenge for the 4th Committee is to consider the terms of international cooperation. Unequal access to outer space and spacial technologies among countries cannot be an obstacle to enjoying the benefits derived from the use of this global common. If only a few countries – and companies – have the resources and technologies to access and explore outer space, how to guarantee that these benefits will be directed to the interest of all humanity?

UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

Human rights of internally displaced persons
Portuguese | High School

Internally Displaced Persons, or IDPs, are people who have been forced to flee their homes because of persecution, conflict, violence, or disasters but have not crossed an international border. Today, there are about 53.3 million IDPs around the world. Since they remain in their own countries, they can claim their rights, and states have the primary responsibility to provide protection and assistance to IDPs. However, IDPs can face great difficulties when stuck in conflict zones or when they have to move to places where humanitarian assistance cannot be delivered. In addition, many IDPs lose their jobs and homes, which can lead to poverty. In this sense, FAMUN 2023 invites students to discuss the current situation of IDPs, the main causes of internal displacement, such as climate change, poverty, and conflicts, and how their rights can be protected. One more time, FAMUN takes part in the UNHCR MUN Refugee Challenge. So, Human Rights Council delegates have the important mission of writing innovative and bold resolutions that can ensure the human rights of IDPs.

UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

The situation in Afghanistan

English | High School

Since 2001, the Security Council has been involved in the situation of Afghanistan, having authorized sanctions and the use of force to combat the Taliban rule and establish a new government in the country. Besides, since 2002 the Council has renewed the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, which is responsible for delivering humanitarian assistance and supporting the reconstruction of the country. However, after the Taliban’s seizure of power in 2021, the Council is struggling to stop the escalation of violence and the massive violation of human rights, especially of women and girls. In this grave context, FAMUN 2023 delegates have the urgent task of flipping the Council’s script to foster peace in Afghanistan.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION

Youth employment

Portuguese | High School

Generally, young people face more obstacles in the labor market than adults. According to the ILO, before the COVID-19 pandemic, they were three times more likely to be unemployed. Since 2020, young people have lost their jobs, which has impacted their families’ income. Moreover, online learning made it difficult for the youth to pursue education and training. The current social and economic crises threaten young people’s opportunities in the labor market. For most of them, the only alternative available is to work in informal jobs, especially in the “gig economy”. To face this situation, countries must focus on initiatives that can provide decent jobs for the youth while fostering sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economies. Investments in the “green”, “blue”, digital, creative, and care economies have the potential to ensure decent jobs for young people while fostering the implementation of SDGs 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure), and 13 (climate action).

Mun Refugee Challenge

Safe refuge is a right, but in many countries, refugees still face prejudice and end up being marginalized in the very place that was supposed to ensure their safety. This is why the UNHCR has launched the MUN Challenge: the main goal is to raise awareness against toxic narratives concerning refugees, so we can all be agents of change, helping to transform our communities into refugee-friendly environments.

On its official website, the UNHCR presents the MUN challenge:

“UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is challenging Model United Nations delegates worldwide to debate the major issues related to forced displacement. The best resolutions will win awards and be shared with policymakers” (UNHCR Official website).

FAMUN 2023 is participating in the MUN Refugee Challenge with its two United Nations Human Rights Council simulations for High School, debating the topic “Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons”. The resolutions adopted by FAMUN 2023 High School delegates will be sent to the UNHCR and will be eligible to win the UNHCR award.

You can also help us by spreading the word on the challenge and taking the discussions to your schools/universities. The UNHCR offers some supporting materials, and we are sharing them with you.
